Third Grade Team Brings Columbia Trip to Students

by Stephanie Morgan, 3rd Grade Teacher

Every third grader at CCES enters their class in the fall and promptly asks their teacher, “when do we start our study of South Carolina? When are we going to Columbia?” Then, without skipping a beat, they announce proudly who they plan to be in the renowned CCES Third Grade Play. In the midst of Digital Learning, third grade teachers accepted the reality that students could not make the trip, so instead they brought Columbia to Greenville.

Students received a personal greeting from Governor McMaster after an extensive tour of the grounds, seeing first hand John C. Calhoun and the star markers of the cannonballs from the Civil War. All this thanks to a generous Senator Ross Turner who didn’t hesitate to help out when Mrs. Martin requested a virtual tour.

Senator Turner opened doors to the chamber, the library and in his kind manner, let the students know just how much Columbia misses them right now.

Following the virtual trip to the capitol, students enjoyed virtually touring the Riverbanks Zoo. Now, they embark on research for their virtual Third Grade Play. Swamp Fox, Twister Girls, Edwin McCain and The Carolina Wrenn are all expected to make their virtual appearances next week as third graders wind down DLD with the pride of true South Carolinians.
