Two CCES Student-Athletes Sign To Play Collegiate Athletics

Christ Church Episcopal School celebrated the successes of two of our senior athletes today, November 11, during a signing ceremony. Family, teammates, and select school officials gathered – distanced and masked – to watch John Butler Jr. and Jack Wofford sign letters of intent. John Butler Jr. will be playing basketball at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL and Jack Wofford will be playing golf at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.

 

Athletic Director Molly Miller thanked family, coaches, administration, teachers, friends and teammates for their support both in athletic endeavors and in the classroom as they have helped to shape each of these seniors into the students, athletes, and people they are today. She specifically thanked Head of School David Padilla, our phenomenal college counseling team, and Performing Arts Technical Director Grady McEvoy for making this event possible, even as it looks different due to the current times. Molly went on to expand on both students, summarizing who they are as people and wishing them luck in this next chapter.  

 

With regards to John Butler Jr., Miller shared that his teachers describe him as “polite and humble” and she noted that he has “remained so” through the entirety of his recruitment process. John is described by those around him as kind, a hard worker, a person who leads by example, and a “friend to all.” Miller concluded her remarks about Butler, commenting that Florida State is getting a “phenomenal basketball player” and an “even better person.”

 

Jack Wofford is described by his teachers as someone with a “steady work ethic” and that has demonstrated by how he has pursued his goals, even with a “tremendous setback” due to injury. Jack is described by those around him as a leader, a hard worker, possessing a witty sense of humor, and someone who shows “genuine care for his peers.” Miller shared that Jack’s character was on display for his team as he “remained positive” during his injury and concluded by commenting Presbyterian would be getting “a golfer full of grit and determination.”

 

Congratulations to John and Jack on signing their letters of intent! While today signifies a new chapter, they still have plenty left here. John and the basketball team look to build on last year’s successful season where they set a new record for wins in a season and made it to the 3^rd round of the playoffs. Jack and the golf team are still technically defending state champions after their season was cancelled and look to compete for their 8^th straight title this upcoming spring. Although these two will soon be competing for different teams, we will cherish the time they still have here and they will always be Cavaliers to us! Go Cavs!
