Spotlight On: Kamryn Williams, CCES Class of 2021

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications

Christ Church Episcopal School experiences have prepared graduating seniors for whatever comes next and to make a positive difference in the world. Each week, we will put the spotlight on a graduating senior from the Class of 2021.  We hope you enjoy getting to know these amazing CCES students!

When you think of Miami, FL, sunny beaches, live music, cultural flavor (literally), and South Beach vibes immediately come to mind— and don’t get us wrong, location was a big factor for Kamryn Williams in choosing the University of Miami.  “Florida is a state that I love very much,” she says, “Miami in particular.”  However, did you know that University of Miami is host to one of the most highly rated neuropsychology programs in the country?  That was the real draw for Kamryn as she intends to major in Neuropsychology with a Criminology focus.  The undergraduate program attracts the most highly qualified students from around the world, and she is certainly no exception.

Kamryn has achieved the trifecta of excellence as a student in her thirteen years at CCES.  Her academics are top-notch, she is a gifted and talented artist, and an exceptionally successful athlete.  It is hardly surprising that she is a frequent flyer on the Honor Roll, chose to study the hardest language for a non-native to learn— Chinese, beginning in Middle School— and enrolled in two Global Online Academy courses: Abnormal Psychology and Race & Society while in the Upper School.   Kamryn chose to move far beyond her one semester art class requirement, challenging herself in Art Honors and then AP Art.   She is a competitive golfer with a year-round commitment to the sport.  Yet despite being on the South Carolina Junior Golf Association (SCJGA) and playing in the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour (PKBGT), the largest girls-only tour in the nation, she also finds time to compete on club volleyball and school basketball teams!  Kamryn was chosen to participate in the CCES Leadership Institute and has been a valued member of the Ubuntu Upper-class, Art, Service, Diversity, Vestry, and CCES Debate & Mock Trial Clubs.  She has been an active volunteer with Jack and Jill of AmericaInc.— a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2-19, dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.  And is also a pianist, having taken lessons with Piano Central since the first grade.

“I have found my time at CCES to be very rewarding and filled with opportunities for growth,” Kamryn stated.  “The rigor of the course work has ensured that I will be especially prepared for my collegiate experience. I have formed lifetime bonds with many of my fellow students.”

Of all her awards and accolades, and there are many, the Extra Mile Award for golf stands out to me the most.  ‘Going the extra mile’ seems to be her motto, mantra, and personal call to action.

“I’ve learned that Kamryn makes decisions based on her individual interests, her comfort level with her uniqueness, and her dedication to standing out and embracing challenges,” said Lindsey Waters, Associate Director of College Counseling.  What you cannot see as clearly from her long list of honors and accomplishments, are Kamryn’s contributions to her friends.  “Kamryn has friends that have grown up very differently than she has grown up,” Ms. Waters remarked.  “She has thrown birthday parties, given gifts, and invited friends on family trips who have never had these experiences.  Kamryn uses her blessings and experiences to enhance the lives of others.”

With sunshiny weather and prime golf courses on her list of college must-haves, Kamryn also applied to Florida State, Florida Atlantic, the University of Central Florida, Duke, the University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, College of Charleston, the University of South Carolina, and North Carolina A&T State University.  An impressive list of schools, all of which would have been lucky to have her.

JUST FOR FUN!

If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?  I would choose my mother because she exemplifies everything I desire to be.
What is your personal motto?  Excellence, everywhere, at all times.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?  Take Aerial (sling/hammock) classes!
If you could travel back in time and visit your younger self, what grade would you go back to and why?  I would go back to Primer and tell myself to enjoy my rest and digest time.
What is your favorite vacation spot?  Miami or Turks and Caicos.
