Kate DeStefano ’23, Completes Eagle Scout Project at Conestee Nature Preserve

excerpted from conesteepreserve.org

Have you seen these new map kiosks around Conestee Nature Preserve (CNP)?  It's all part of the park’s effort to make the trails more navigable and help people not get lost!

Kate DeStefano, a junior at CCES, chose this initiative for her Eagle Scout project.  As a member of Blue Ridge Council, Boy Scouts of America in Greenville, Kate managed the building and installation of two trail map kiosks.  The routes designated on the map assist visitors in exploring all that CNP has to offer.  Each colored route is matched to trail blazes found marked on trees, signs, and other guideposts.  The specified routes facilitate convenient access to the incredible variety of ecosystems found at CNP.  The preserve says they were lucky to have Kate’s help with the project.

CNP is a special place where the DeStefano’s frequently experience nature together.  Kate’s hope is that the addition of more maps around the Preserve will help encourage other families to visit and explore.

Not only has Kate made a difference in the Preserve through this project, she has also made a big difference in the Scouts.  She is a part of the first girls troop in Mauldin, Scouts BSA Troop 815 Messiah Lutheran Mauldin SC.  This group has allowed Kate opportunities, leadership roles, and essential life skills she will carry with her forever.  She hopes to be one of the few girls ever to achieve Eagle Rank in the Upstate.

Congratulations to Kate on this incredible achievement!
