2021 Homecoming Week Recap!

Amy Lysek, Upper School Chemistry and Student Council Advisor

Homecoming is always an exciting time of year at Christ Church, a time for our alumni to be invited back to celebrate their bond with our school; a time for friends both old and young to reconnect and recognize the contributions of athletes, coaches, and CCES community leaders.  In the Upper School, this is also a time to participate in spirited events and activities with a focus on charity.  Our student council chose Serenity Place as this year’s beneficiary.

But Homecoming 2021 felt even more exhilarating as half of our student body had not experienced a Homecoming in the Upper School before.  This year’s participation was something wonderful to watch. The week kicked off with an outdoor movie on Linda B. Reeves Field with the showing of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!  The old classic drew in a record crowd as students threw down blankets, set up lawn chairs, and kicked back to enjoy the show.  Of course, it didn’t hurt that they also got to enjoy the sweet treats of Kona Ice.

Monday morning had students gathering in the chapel for assembly, decked out in red, white, and blue, showing off their patriotic spirit for ‘Merican Monday.  Rain had been a concern but it didn’t stop the Corn Hole and Spike Ball Tournaments that evening.  Students, and faculty chaperones alike, enjoyed the evening of fun and fellowship.

Tuesday had a slew of Tacky Tourists roaming the halls and preparing for their TCBY tasty treats at lunch. While Wednesday found the grades battling it out in Color Wars. It was a small preview of that night’s Dodgeball Tournament. Eighteen teams gave it their all, but it came down to a tight battle between the Mailmen and the Q-Dawgs in the final match!

Jersday Thursday was a spirited day full of students from all grades repping their favorite teams and players. The Upper School came together for a prayer walk and Homecoming Court presentation in Carson Stadium. That evening, the students traded in their jerseys for cowboy boots and flannels for the Cavalier Hoedown dance at the Robertson-Navarro Baseball Pavilion. And we even witnessed a stampede to McCall Field House to cheer on the Lady Cavaliers in Volleyball.

We wrapped up the week on Friday, decked out in Cavalier blue and Homecoming shirts. Students were pumped up for Karaoke at lunch and a showdown that night as the Cavaliers hosted Heathwood Hall. At halftime, the 2021 Homecoming Court was recognized and senior Crosby Reed was crowned Homecoming Queen by Head of School, David Padilla, and his wife, Karen.

But this week’s activities would not have been possible if not for the many weeks of planning by the Student Council, led by Student Body Officers Alex Eastland, Cate Alexander, and Crosby Reed and Student Council advisors Amy Lysek, Nichole Daniels, Dr. Josh Stone, and Father Wallace Adams-Riley.
