Winter Signing Day - Mason Johnstone '22

Christ Church Episcopal School celebrated the success of one senior athlete today, November 2, during a signing ceremony. Family, teammates, coaches, and school officials gathered in Rooke Theater to watch Mason Johnstone sign his letter of intent to play football at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.

 

Athletic Director Molly Miller thanked family, coaches, administration, teachers, friends, and teammates for their support of Mason in his athletic and academic endeavors. She specifically thanked Head of School David Padilla the Senior Leadership team, the Upper School division directors, and all CCES faculty and staff for their support of athletics and the role it plays in developing student-athletes on and off the field. She also recognized our phenomenal College Counseling team for guiding students throughout the college process and organizing signing ceremonies; our Booster Club for all they do to support our athletic programs and student-athletes; and our Performing Arts Technical team for all they do to make these signing days possible.

 

Molly went on to expand on Mason, sharing thoughts from both his teachers and coaches. Described by his teachers as curious, humble, fun-loving, and someone who has grown both as a student and person over his high school career, Mason is a leader who has continued to “take on increased academic and extracurricular challenges.” One of his teachers shares that Mason has “the ability to see issues from multiple perspectives.”

 

Mason’s coaches describe him as “extremely coachable and a joy to be around.” Varsity Football Head Coach Quin Hatfield calls Mason “goal-oriented, meticulous in detail, a force on the field, and having a huge impact on the team’s culture.” Hatfield says, “One of the core values of Christ Church Football is to be a great teammate, and Mason embodies this to the fullest extent.” He highlights Mason’s willingness to switch positions for his senior year, despite the direct impact on his personal stats and the fact that, more often than not, Mason was the first down the field to congratulate teammates when they scored touchdowns. Molly closed with Hatfield’s final thoughts on Mason: “He consistently lifts others up and genuinely enjoys seeing his teammates excel. He makes others around him better… that’s what great leaders and great teammates do.”

 

Congratulations to Mason for his accomplishments at CCES and for seeing his dream of being a Clemson Tiger come true. We wish him the best in his next chapter, and even though his jersey will soon be orange, he will always be a Cavalier! Go Cavs!
