SPOTLIGHT ON: ROBERT THOMPSON, CCES CLASS OF 2022

 

 

If you’ve seen him walking down the halls you know, senior Robert Thompson almost always wears an illuminating smile on his face.  Aside from his popular smile, he is known for being positive, optimistic, extroverted, and outgoing.  One faculty member was overheard saying, “There is never a day in class that Robert does not have a positive attitude.”

 

We should add decisive to his list of personality traits, as Robert has strong decision making skills, often making up his mind firmly and quickly.  Case in point, he knew exactly where he wanted to attend college.  He made the choice to commit and apply Early Decision to Wofford University, where he was accepted.  “The main reason that I choose Wofford was for the small class sizes and their Interim.”  Wofford’s popular Interim program is a four-week period between the fall and spring semesters that allows students to focus on a single topic through professional internships/independent studies or travel/study projects.  While Robert is still undecided on a major, he will most likely pursue a path in business.

 

Robert came to CCES as a fourth grader, getting a brief taste of Lower School life before heading off to Middle School.  By the time he entered Upper School, Robert was a glowing representation of a Cavalier— the consummate student, artist, athlete, and a friendly and welcoming presence on campus.  Lindsey Waters, Associate Director of College Counseling, says she first met Robert during his 9th grade year, when the Upper School hosted a preview day for 8th grade students.  “I remember thinking that this mature, engaging, welcoming student was the perfect person to represent our school,” she said.  It is no wonder Robert has been a student ambassador since ninth grade, and now serves as Student Ambassador Chair.  “Robert has been a tremendous asset to the Student Ambassador program,” said Leigh Johnstone, Director of Admission.  “He works to connect and share relevant pieces from his CCES experience with each visitor and new student whom he comes into contact with.  Robert is personal, friendly, self-driven, proactive, and organized— traits that have helped take the CCES Student Ambassador organization to new heights.  He leaves huge shoes to fill.”

 

Robert has been a member of the golf team since seventh grade earning an All-State honor as a sophomore, a High Honor Roll or Honor Roll achiever throughout all four years of high school, and the recipient of the Lane Abrams Growth Mindset Award last spring at the Underclassmen Award Ceremony.  This award “recognizes an Upper School student who demonstrates achievement while fostering a growth mindset; a person who exhibits grit and resolve by showing innovation, motivation, and productivity in his or her daily pursuits, both academic and personal.”  Robert embodies a growth mindset.

 

College is hard.  The lack of structure, the harder course work, and the independence and responsibility all create an environment that is more stressful than high school.  “I know that Robert’s success, in and out of the classroom, will surely continue in college,” said Waters.  And, in true Robert style, we’re certain he will make it through by staying positive.

On weekends you can find me… fishing, hunting, or spending time on the boat!

Favorite 3D art creation? A coffee table I made out of pine and epoxy.

What is your favorite vacation spot? A small island in the Bahamas called, Harbor Island.

If you could create one mandatory course for future seniors, what would it be? Finance class!
