Students and Faculty Gather for Convocation 2022-23
On August 22nd, 1203 CCES students -- a record breaking number for the first day of school -- filled bleachers, folding chairs, and spots on the floor of McCall Field House for Convocation. This annual ceremony brings the entire school community together to kick off the new school year and reflect on the values and traditions that make CCES so unique.
Dr. Angela Allen, Associate Head of School, opened with a welcome back. She emphasized the core values of CCES -- Character, Community, Excellence, and Service – and called for reflection of “who we are now, and who do we want to be as we move forward?” Henry Wofford ’28 gave the opening prayer, followed by the Blue Belles singing The Star-Spangled Banner. Leighton Williams and Harper Johnson, Class of 2034 did an amazing job leading everyone in The Pledge of Allegiance.
Head of School David Padilla continued on the theme of the school’s core values -- a reminder of who we, as a school community, strive to be. “At CCES, there is balance of traditions and growth, understanding and respecting, and accepting what we are in common as well as what makes different,” he said. “We all want ourselves, this place, and this year to be the best it can be so that we can move beyond CCES to make the world the best place it can be.”
Next, the JV and Varsity cheerleaders helped get students back in the school spirit with their cheers, stunts, and dance routines. While the phrase “’cause we are the best” is most often heard at Friday night football games, here, the words served as a reminder of the excellence CCES strives for in all facets of school life – the classroom, the athletic fields, the stage, and beyond.
Student Body President, Harris Clark ’23, spoke eloquently, describing CCES as “more than a school, it is a community… a home.” He continued, “Part of being a Cavalier is wanting the best for others, even when it pushes us outside our comfort zones or requires personal sacrifice.” He encouraged students that no matter the task at hand – learning math, trying a new club, or writing a college essay, that they should “always remember that your Cavaliers are here to support you and want to help you succeed.”
Convocation closed with a performance of the CCES Alma Mater by the Blue Bells and a blessing from Father Wallace. May all students and faculty at CCES “be swift to love and make haste to be kind” as yet another fun and exciting year begins!
