3rd Grade Ellis Island Simulation

Ashleigh Hambright
Our third graders have been focusing on our IB unit: Where We Are In Place and Time. Throughout this unit we have used Ellis Island as our focal point. Our central idea is: Throughout time, people have migrated for many reasons, which affects the way they begin a new life. We coincided our novel study, What Was Ellis Island?, to a real-life simulation so students could truly empathize with our ancestors and immigrants who helped form our great nation. Our students created a piece of luggage and a passport to help with their travels to America. All 75 third graders were assigned a country to migrate from (Germany, England, Italy, Russia, Ireland). Upon arrival, “immigrants” had to pass through five different stations. These stations included: medical, interview, passport, information, and baggage. If he/she passed all five stations, he/she was given a landing card which was a ticket to America to start a brand new life. It was a chance to leave the old world and enter into the new world.
