18 CCES Orchestra and Choir Students Receive Regional and National Recognition

The Arts at CCES continue to thrive. In the first few months of the school year, we’ve had an outstanding fall drama, visiting visual artists, and ongoing preparations for the end-of-semester concerts. And now, we have had eighteen students across all three divisions invited to participate at the regional, state, and national level.

Region 2 Honors Orchestra

Six CCES orchestra students auditioned and were selected to participate in the Region 2 Honors Orchestra. Eighth graders Lynne Lominack, Christopher Kim, Caroline Bruner, and Cooper Howard and junior Arya Krishniah will play violin. Tenth grader Sierra Kremenliev will play cello. These students will present a free concert on Saturday November 19. at 5:00 PM, at Wade Hampton HS. Being a member of the Region 2 Honors orchestra also grants them the privilege of auditioning for the SC All-State orchestra, which will take place in February.

SCMEA Honors Choir

This year we were happy to have all six Honor Choir nominees accepted into the South Carolina Music Educators Association State Elementary Honor Choir. Fourth graders Miles Black, Alaina de Nazareth, Sophia Fulk, Jasmine Gilchrist, August Knight, and Emma Sippey will work on the Honor Choir music in advance, then travel to Columbia on February 2 to join approximately 300 students from all over South Carolina. There, the full choir will rehearse a set of challenging and diverse selections under the direction of nationally known choral conductor Herbert Washington. They will perform on Saturday morning, Feb. 4 for an audience of parents, teachers, and many music educators. What an amazing experience this will be for these students. They will represent CCES well!

American Choral Directors Association National Honor Choirs

Six Upper School Choir members were accepted into the American Choral Directors Association National Honor Choirs taking place in Cincinnati, Ohio from February 22-25, 2023. These prestigious choirs received 4000 auditions from across all 50 states, with students competing for 1200 spots across four choirs. Seniors Eliza Hoffman, Mills Howell, Cate Lyerly, and Georgia Merchen will take part in the High School SSAA (treble voices) National Honor Choir, conducted by Dr. Pearl Shangkuan. Freshmen Fitz Keller and Julian Monsell will take part in the Junior High/Middle School SATB (mixed voices, grades 6-9) National Honor Choir, directed by Dr. Andrea Ramsey. Prior to their departure, students will rehearse and memorize a program of choral music selections with their CCES choral director, Todd Monsell. They will then spend three days rehearsing with their fellow choir singers from across the country, culminating in a public performance in Cincinnati on Saturday, February 25. Congratulations to these students!
