THREE CCES STUDENT-ATHLETES SIGN THEIR LETTERS OF INTENT

Kim Gendron, Social Media Coordinator

Christ Church Episcopal School celebrated the successes of three senior student-athletes today, November 9, during a signing ceremony. Family, teammates, coaches, and school officials gathered in Rooke Theater to watch Jordan Butler, Hampton Hughes, and Kylie Larkin sign their letters of intent. Jordan Butler will be playing basketball at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, Hampton Hughes will be playing soccer at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, and Kylie Larkin will be swimming at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina.

Director of Athletics, Molly Miller, thanked family, coaches, administration, teachers, friends, and teammates, acknowledging all the support they have provided and their roles in shaping each of these seniors into the students, athletes, and people they are today. She specifically thanked Head of School, David Padilla, the Senior Leadership team, division directors, and assistant directors for all they have done to support the athletic department at CCES, recognizing the important role athletics can play in the development of students. Miller also thanked the phenomenal CCES College Counseling team, the Performing Arts Technical team, and the CCES Booster Club for all they do to support these student-athletes and to make these signing days possible. She noted that this signing day is the first where all athletes are also state champions, before expanding on each of the students, sharing thoughts and reflections from their teachers and coaches.

Jordan Butler is described by his teachers as authentic, kind, supportive, and “one whose presence puts other at ease.” He is encouraging, gentle, and a “positive presence in the classroom.” They share that Jordan has a “huge heart” and the “ability to make you smile no matter how your day is going.”

Varsity Basketball Assistant Coaches, Todd Mattos and Jordan Filiatreau describe Jordan as a “gifted and humble player who can impact the game in many different ways.” They note what a pleasure it has been to watch Jordan’s accelerated development, both as a player and a leader, over the past two years. Jordan has managed high expectations and the pressures of being the focus of game plans with “confidence and grace.” In addition to all of his accomplishments on the court, they also note: “Jordan is also a great person” and “the sky’s the limit for him.”

Teachers describe Hampton Hughes as kind, considerate, responsible, hard-working, and a “student who is able to form friendships with many different kinds of people.” He is a “refreshing presence” and a “consummate leader” who treats his leadership positions with “pride, integrity, and humility.”

Varsity Boys Soccer Head Coach Anthony Esquivel calls Hampton “one of the great student-athletes our program has ever produced.” Hampton is a leader on and off the field who has “guided us to championships, but more importantly made an everlasting mark on our program’s culture.” Esquivel considers it an “honor” to have coached Hampton at CCES and says, “I believe Hampton will continue on his path of having success on the field, in the classroom, and in the community [at Davidson].”

Kylie Larkin is described by her teachers as one who is both dedicated and sincerely kind in everything she does. She is diligent, reliable, hard-working, and mature beyond her years. Kylie is “a rare find – respected by all who know her and able to take everything she does seriously without taking herself too seriously.”

Varsity Swim Head Coach Matt Jacobssen calls Kylie’s decision to attend CCES for high school “one of the best days in the history of the CCES swimming program.” He describes Kylie as a beloved teammate – one who leads by example and who embodies grace. Jacobssen calls Kylie “one of the most accomplished swimmers to ever wear Cavalier blue,” but notes her attention to detail and constant desire to improve. He says, “The Gamecocks are getting a true luminary – a graceful leader, a true competitor, and a kind friend.”

Congratulations to Jordan, Hampton, and Kylie for all of their accomplishments at Christ Church as well as those to come in these next chapters! While they will soon be competing for different teams, they will always be Cavaliers to us. Go Cavs!
