International Chapel

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Marketing & PR
Today’s chapel service was a celebration of international languages and cultures as well as a tribute to all of our language teachers here at CCES.  Students in all divisions read, spoke, and even preached, in languages not their own.  Talk about stepping out of your comfort zone!  The Rev. Marie Cope, Associate Priest at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, joined us.  Reading spanned a multitude of languages, including English, Hebrew, German, Latin, Greek, Chinese, Spanish and French.  The Upper School choir, led by Mrs. Robin Garner sang “Dona Nobum Pacem”, a Latin hymn that translates to “Grant Us Peace”.

Perhaps most impressive was the sermon, delivered by two students and their translators.  Jack Nichols ‘18 preached in Spanish, with Harris Sierra ‘18 translating, followed by Emily Thomas ’18 who preached in French, with Alston Lewis ‘18 translating.  To prepare and deliver a sermon, preach to a congregation of your peers, in a second language nonetheless, is nothing short of spectacular.

Cici Zhao ‘20 and Sophia Ossmann ’21 beautifully sang, “The Wonderful Powerful Song”, in
Chinese during Holy Communion.

Chapel closed with a Lower School favorite, “This is the Day”, sung in English, German, and Spanish.  Many Upper School students reflected fondly on this song, which they recall from their Lower School days, and began to clap in harmony, as our Lower School students still do, bringing a smile to many faces. Ah, the memories!
