Gina Varat Named 2018 Conservation Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to fifth grade science teacher Gina Varat, who was named 2018 Conservation Teacher of the Year by the Greenville County Soil & Water Conservation District on May 14th, 2018.

She was recognized, in part, due to her work on the CCES Wetlands Lab project on campus near the CCES Middle School.  Where most people saw a plain stormwater retention pond, Middle School science teacher, Gina Varat, saw the possibility of a remarkable learning resource for ALL CCES students.  Through an amazing collaboration between a visionary teacher, a generous donor, and the City of Greenville, come fall CCES will have its very own, on-campus wetlands laboratory!

With the guidance of their teachers, students from all three divisions will be able to utilize this space, which will surely spark curiosity, change perspectives, and deepen their understanding of environmental science.  A newly constructed boardwalk will provide safe access to this outdoor classroom as well as a central place from which to observe, explore, and interact with this thriving habitat.

This exciting new addition will be "unveiled" at the start of the 2018-19 school year and is very much thanks to Mrs. Varat.  Look for more news to come!
