CCES Celebrates the Tenures of Three Amazing Teachers

by Eli Connaughton, Director of Development Communications
On Sunday, May 20, a large crowd of friends and family, colleagues, and CCES alumni gathered to honor the tenures of US English teacher, Kathy Adamee, US Art teacher, Susanne Abrams, and MS Art teacher, Alice Ballard. For 34, 33, and 22 years respectively, each of these remarkable teachers has inspired our CCES students and faculty members as well. (Look for more in-depth stories about these teachers and their contributions to CCES in the fall issue of Highlights. But, for now, we just wanted to share a few moments from this joyful celebration.)

US Digital Media teacher Owen Riley, Director of College Counseling Linda Schulz, and US Art teacher Dana Kimmel shared beautiful stories about how their friendships with Susanne Abrams have been a source of joy and, in some cases, have helped shaped their lives in positive and profound ways.

In a moving tribute, CCES Alumni Chad Odom ‘88, told of how Kathy Adamee was one of the first teachers to recognize his reading challenges as a young student and spent extra time working with him and encouraging him. US Director Wes Clarke recounted her immense energy and vision which have created two lasting traditions – the Ninth Grade Mystery Trip and the Sophomore Project. He then shared a letter from Mrs. Adamee’s longtime friend and fellow US English teacher, Barbara Carter, who described her friend as “one of the kindest and most passionate teachers regarding her craft” with whom she has had the pleasure to work.

MS Art teacher Brent Roberts reflected on his experiences working alongside Alice Ballard in the Middle School. He spoke of her generous spirit and contagious enthusiasm, spearheading unique projects for her students like creating and installing clay mosaics in front of the Middle School.

Mr. Roberts then presented each of them with a flower arrangements tumbling out of three beautiful vases that he sculpted, painted, and fired.

In honor of Ms. Abrams, CCES has named a section of the US Presentation room The Susanne Abrams Gallery, which will display artwork created by US students. For Ms. Adamee, the school will establish The Kathy Adamee Award for a student who demonstrates the most growth and/or skill in the areas of academic research and presentation of his or her Sophomore Project. For Ms. Ballard, the Middle School will dedicate what will be named The Sunflower Wall to display fifth and sixth grade artwork.

It was obvious from the smiles, hugs, and more than a few happy tears how much these teachers have meant to so many in our community and the legacy that they are leaving behind. We will miss them, but are grateful that, for so many years, they have shared their hearts and gifts with us all.
