2019-20 Convocation

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications

All 1115 CCES students, 211 of them new to the school, filled the seats of McCall Field House this August 26th for Convocation. The ceremony marked the beginning of the 2019-20 school year and more importantly, the entrance into the life and traditions of the Christ Church Episcopal School community. It commenced with an Opening Prayer by Pera Roberts, Class of 2024, followed by The Star-Spangled Banner sung by the Blue Belles, and The Pledge of Allegiance proudly led by Luke Stewart and Ivy Brashier, Class of 2031. Headmaster Dr. Leonard Kupersmith noted in his opening remarks, “I am honored and privileged to serve as your Head of School in our sixtieth anniversary year, my final year and last Convocation. A community is measured by the quality of the people who comprise it and the culture that community members inherit and sustain. All of you here today contribute to an environment with a high happiness quotient.”

Mrs. Cary Weekes, in her second year as Board of Trustees Chair reflected on Dr. Kupersmith’s final year as Head of School saying “despite Leonard’s proclamations that this year will be business as usual, we will also dedicate time to honoring Leonard’s legacy as the longest serving (and most transformative) headmaster in CCES’s 60-year history.”

Cary went on to say, “The hard work of everyone in this room drives straight to living out the CCES mission through a growth mindset—or rather, our Cavalier mindset. Hard work pays off and it is wonderful to see that happening here in every corner of the school.”

Chapman Mann, Student Body President and Member of the Class of 2020 spoke to the student body next, recalling fondly when he started his first year at CCES, as a third grader. "I remember walking in the gym, seeing older and younger students filling the bleachers and the floor. During Convocation I was sitting on the ground as I was a part of Mrs. Martin’s class. One thing that has always stuck with me was how I understood that there was something more than just a school here. I felt the growing bond that this community held."

And then they were off, to begin another year of inspired learning.
