54 CCES Students Attend SC Youth In Government Conference

by Spencer Jones, Upper School History Teacher

Upper School students recently returned to Greenville after an outstanding 2019 South Carolina Youth in Government Conference! Our delegation sent 54 students to Columbia to deliberate legislation and compete in four rounds of Mock Trial tournaments.

Two of our bills were signed into law by the SC Youth Governor. Seniors Abby Riddle and Natalie Anderson presented legislation to raise state fines for texting while driving. Junior Kelsey Morse and Senior Arthur Bishop presented legislation requiring a state permit for ownership of all kangaroo species, non-human primates, as well as all varieties of Tegu lizards. Both bills made it successfully through committees, the House, the Senate, and all the way to the Governor's Desk before being signed into law. Great job, legislators!

The Mock Trial teams wrote their own opening and closing statements, questions for defense and cross-examination, and role plays for witness testimonies. Both teams confidently grappled with the intricacies of a tough civil lawsuit, and learned a great deal about the workings of a courtroom along the way.

Senior Eleanor Clark was selected as one of only two Youth Presiding Judges. She rose to the occasion with poise and purpose. Way to go, Eleanor!
