Make it Rain! First Graders Forecast Weather with WYFF4 Meteorologist Cedric Haynes
Not surprisingly, the Lower School library was all abuzz with excitement this Thursday when first grade classes met with WYFF4 Meteorologist Cedric Haynes to learn more about weather and climate. The classes have spent the last few weeks learning about weather conditions, the natural world, and the changing seasons in their PYP Unit: How the World Works (“The Sky is Falling”).
Cedric tells students his interest in weather started around 7 years old, the approximate age of most of his audience, when a tornado destroyed his neighborhood. The storm dropped nearly 30 inches of snow in southern Georgia, and Cedric’s fascination with it led him to stay involved in, and pursue his interest in weather through high school and college. Hands pop up from the very start! “Are you nervous on TV?” “How does a green screen work?” “How do you know if it’s going to rain”, they ask. Cedric tells students all about making a forecast, building out weather graphics, and describes some of the traditional meteorological symbols used on weather maps. He shows students how he forecasts the day’s weather, be it hot and humid or cold and dreary, and how satellites, equipped with radars, take pictures from space helping meteorologists predict things as simple as whether or not it’s going to rain.
Cedric held their interest for over an hour, quite the feat for a first grade audience! His visit helped students better appreciate how we use our understanding of scientific principles to predict, connect, and recognize various weather patterns.
Suffice it to say the students (and adults) got in touch with their inner weatherperson. Now, back to you, Cedric.
