Tripp Teague and Betty Frances Thomason Named Epiphany Scholars

At the Epiphany Chapel service on Thursday, January 27, with juniors and seniors present and freshman and sophomores joining via livestream, a surprised Tripp Teague ’22 and Betty Frances Thomason ‘22 received awards as this year’s Epiphany Scholars.  Established in 1991, the Epiphany Scholarship is advanced by the Rector of Christ Church Episcopal to honor a student who exemplifies commitment to Christian values through worship, sensitivity, and outreach to others, and it certainly seemed that both Tripp and Betty Frances were more than deserving recipients.

 

Betty Frances’ close friend Franke Prince proudly shared a personal reflection on their friendship and her generosity, kindness, and care for others.  Frankie painted a beautiful picture of the truly altruistic person Betty Frances is.  Upper School Mathematics Teacher Dan Wilkie spoke of his experience teaching Betty Frances Precalculus Honors, a class he says she not only performed at the highest level, but “became a beacon that other students could rely on when there were low points in their understanding of the material.”  Mr. Wilkie went on to say, “the number of times I have witnessed her dedication to friends and classmates in need, continually put a smile on my face and it made me wonder where does this drive to help come from?  I decided to inquire with some of her friends and classmates just to get a sense of their thoughts on Betty Frances. The consensus was simple and to the point, it is just who she is.”

 

Upper School History Teacher and Cross-Country Coach Charlie Woodward introduced the next recipient, Tripp Teague.  Mr. Woodward acknowledged the enthusiasm and energy Tripp is known for, but also spoke about the character and sincerity behind the showman.  “I have coached Tripp for four years, and he’s constantly looking out for his teammates, cheering them on, looking for ways to speak a supportive word, celebrating their achievements,” he said.  “Tripp was the same way in my class – positively interacting with his classmates, drawing people into the conversation, looking to help others and ask for their help as well.”

Tripp’s friends Evan Repp ’22 and Aidan Owens ’22 echoed that sentiment reflecting on Tripp's numerous announcements, dance moves, and enthusiasm as the Cavalier.  E.C. (Evan) commented, “Tripp strives to make an impression on those around him through active participation in classrooms, social gatherings, extra-curricular activities, and just about any other form you could possibly think of.  More than any other person I’ve met, he’s completely unafraid to be himself.”  Aidan added, “Tripp has put so much effort into becoming this welcoming figure for anyone who needs it.  I can’t think of a single time where a mood has been remotely dampened with him on the scene.”
