LEADERSHIP, ACCOLADES, AND AWARDS AT THE SC YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE

Kim Gendron, Social Media Coordinator

45 Upper School students recently competed in the 2022 South Carolina Youth in Government Conference (YIG). These outstanding students in our delegation deliberated legislation and competed in Mock Trial tournaments.

Molly Morgan ‘23 and Lauren Pimentel ‘23 were presiding legislators. One of our mock trial teams (Elijah Butcher ‘24, Anabelle de Brux ‘24, Addy Claire Jones ’25, Dodson Kramer ‘26, Ginevra Mor ‘25, Pera Roberts ‘24, and Linda Rogers ‘25) finished as State Champions and have qualified for Nationals! Elijah Butcher received the Susan Hilt Outstanding Attorney Award for demonstrating exceptional understanding of the case and Pera Roberts was the only finalist to receive a perfect score.

At YIG, students gain a deeper understanding of governmental systems through discussing and debating societal issues with other students. Through this program, students further develop their perspective of service-learning, or learning through doing. Upper School History Instructor, Diego Miranda, shares, “I’m proud of our Mock Trial Delegation for their very successful trip to Columbia!” He notes how balanced the group was across the board, with all teams – freshman, sophomore and juniors, and seniors – experiencing a lot of success and gaining real-world experience. Other notable shout outs include: Kinsley Bitner ‘26, captain of the freshman team; Owen Gregory ‘26, the only freshman to receive a perfect score; and Hannah Cwynar ‘25, captain of the sophomore/junior team and recipient of a perfect score.

Congratulations to all of these students for their hard work!
